The UPM Food Bank Partnership was initiated by the management of
the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL). This Federation establishes the fifty-five Food Banks of Spain, as non-profit organizations, based on volunteering. Their aim is to recover food surpluses from our society and re-distribute them among people in need, avoiding any waste or misuse.
These Banks operate in developed societies and awaken the spirit of solidarity and promote human values. It remains necessary to promote specific actions necessary to contribute to resolve the contradiction in developed societies: the existence of food surpluses while at the same time there is great poverty social marginalization.
The main actions of the Partnership are organized in the following areas:
-
Training and educational cooperation: at a college and university level, through activities in colleges, institutes, and centres of the UPM.
-
Dissemination and transfer of knowledge: through curriculum activities in banks, seminars, projects as well as undergraduate and postgraduate theses.
-
Scientific research: promoting the dissemination through congresses and scientific journals of the experiences and the studies carried out within the partnership.
